First Light | Legacy Reserve Collection

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Legacy Reserve | Edition of 20

In 1975 when Mangelsen created his very first limited edition photograph, he made the decision to hold back his most valuable prints, numbered 1 to 20, so that one day as a career capstone they would be offered as part of a Legacy Reserve Collection. Many images featured in this collection have been sold out for more than a decade, complemented by recent masterworks destined to sell out in the future.

Initially reserved for museums, conservation nonprofits, and family members, collectors now have the unique opportunity to acquire Mangelsen’s “best of the best” photographs, to own one of the twenty numbers from his personal artist reserve. Each Legacy Reserve fine art collector will be invited to join the legendary photographer for an unforgettable Grand Teton Adventure

Mangelsen is as much a conservationist as he is an artist, and thus a portion of the Legacy Reserve Collection proceeds will be donated to critical conservation issues close to his heart.

ABOUT THE IMAGE:
In Jackson Hole, Ansel Adams executed one of his most heralded black and white landscape photographs ever with Snake River Overlook. Just up the river a spell, Thomas D. Mangelsen produced a composition said to rival that of Adams.

First Light – Grizzly Bear is another Mangelsen masterpiece. It conveys a wilder mood of the same valley by featuring an iconic species that was largely absent from Jackson Hole in Adams’ time. The subject of First Light – Grizzly Bear isn’t merely any bruin, but legendary Grizzly 399, the most famous mother bear in the world and the subject of Mangelsen’s award-winning book, “Grizzlies of Pilgrim Creek.”

“She appeared in front of me as if in a dream,” Mangelsen says. “I had gone to the Snake River at dawn on a beautiful autumn morning as I had done for many previous years searching for elk. And then it happened. As the Tetons lit up with the glow of dawn on the top of Mt. Moran, 399 strolled out of the willows along the shoreline and crossed the river. For me, the moment was pure serendipity.”
