ABOUT THE IMAGE:
Thomas D. Mangelsen always puts a lot of thought into choosing titles for his photographs, at times favoring poetry over more basic descriptions of natural history.
The coastal rainforest stretching from California northward through British Columbia into Alaska has produced some of the mightiest trees and richest temperate ecosystems in the world. Although many of the forests have been clear cut, the living arboreal giants felled, Mangelsen saw in this photograph in Knight Inlet, along the coast of British Columbia, a vision that humankind will hopefully be more enlightened in the future.
“I believe in the mystery of Mother Nature, in her resilience and more than ever I understand her fragility,” Mangelsen says. “The sight of a coil of rusting cable anchored in stone among the golden kelp evoked memories of years past when giant barges were loaded with the remnants of old growth forests being shipped to distant lands. This image reminds me that when some things vanish, they do so forever.”
When at last a gentle rain came, the bear, viewed as the "Guardian of Knight Inlet"
, was enshrouded in a squall and then, when it lifted, was gone.
