2672 Clearing Skies - Elk
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Rising clouds above the Firehole River in Yellowstone National Park signal a clearing storm. Weather patterns change quickly in this part of North America, accounting for freak snowstorms in July and early snow which often blankets the aspens before they drop their leaves. Elk, adapted for extreme shifts in climate, will stay until winter definitively sets in. Only then, with senses fine-tuned to atmospheric pressure, will they descend to a lower elevation, continuing on to wintering areas such as the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Edition of 950.
