2893 Morning Shower
St. Andrews Bay, Island of South Georgia
Winner of American Photo magazine's Nature Image of the Year 2007
Fish have scales and birds have feathers, but the plumage of penguins seems to lie somewhere in between. Smooth to the touch, oily and waterproof, the tight-fitting crop of feathers stems from the same material as human hair. As they return from the sea on the cusp of sunrise, these king penguins shake and preen, their bellies full of krill. Edition of 1200.
