2521 Coastal Reflections - Polar Bear
Hudson Bay, Canada
Polar bears wander to the edge of Hudson Bay to test the strength of the ice, which signals the beginning of seal season. The coastal ice, called nilas, is only a thin, elastic layer of new ice - not nearly strong enough to support the weight of an adult polar bear, at least not for very long. A path to the inner reaches of the bay and seal hunting territory depend on piled pan ice brought in by easterly winds and a continued freeze of coastal ice. Edition of 1200.
