2927 Grizzly's First Spring
Dunraven Pass, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
A several-month old grizzly bear cub re-enacts a game of what humans would call "peek-a-boo" in a field of sticky geranium, forget-me-nots and gentian flowers. In proportion to their size, bears give birth to the smallest mammalian young in comparison to their parents. Standing like a bi-ped on their hind legs, bears are able to keep an eye on each other, in this case, this little one on its mom. She forages nearby, hungry from a winter spent nursing her offspring in a den and eager for the delights of spring: elk carrion and whitebark pine seeds, often raided from squirrel caches. Edition of 2500.
