2923 In the Company of Kings
Royal Bay, South Georgia Island, South Atlantic Ocean
Dwarfing the world's second largest penguin species, a southern elephant seal proves easy company to adult king penguins and even their chicks. King penguins cluster their young in creches to allow both chick's parents to return to the ocean to fish simultaneously, while other adults take turns watching the offspring of other birds. The behemoth seal poses no threat to the colony but his whimsical appearance does put the birds' large size into perspective. Edition of 2500.
