2921 Silent Observer

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Honorable Mention in Nature category of American Photo magazine's Images of the Year 2008. View PDF of Jan/Feb article. (5 MB)

Finding the perfect perch at the end of the day, a great gray owl makes use of the limbs of an old willow to watch for prey. Exquisite aural capabilities allow this hunter to detect the motions of mice and voles unseen to the naked eye, often under deep snow. The presence of an owl is likely to set his neighbors into a frenzy. Earlier, this owl incited dive bombs from magpies, an onslaught of twittering black-capped chickadees and a heartened attempt by a frenetically chirping red squirrel who closely approached the two foot tall bird with the goal of pestering him away. Edition of 2500.
