“Little Sorrel”, a familiar mare in one of the bands of North Lander wild horses, shares a tender moment with her weeks-old foal and a friend from another mare. Wild horses are known to form tight bonds with one another as their multi-family groups work together to survive in the unforgiving wildlands of central Wyoming. When wild horses are rounded up by helicopters and forced into trailers and pens, these ties are severed in the stress of the moment. Young foals who have not yet learned to live on their own are likely to be separated from their mothers, breaking the bonds that are so crucial to their survival.
