Following a journey to southern portions of Jackson Hole in search of food, Grizzly 399 spent much of the late fall in more familiar territory on the National Elk Refuge feasting on gut piles and other pieces of elk discarded by hunters. With abundant food for her and her four cubs, she didn’t begin her journey to the den until late in the year. Over the final three days of December, the large ursine family started the trek north, walking some 30 miles through deep snow, going up and over Blacktail Butte, and crossing the Snake River twice before finally reaching Pilgrim Creek and their den site.
