Having emerged from the den only days prior, Grizzly 399’s four tiny cubs get a first glimpse of their new world. Like many grizzly mothers, 399 prefers to raise her offspring alongside roads. They do this to avoid run-ins with aggressive male bears that can and will kill their cubs. Mature males generally prefer to live their lives in the backcountry. While this provides safety from the opposite sex, it can and sometime does, create human conflict like “bear-jams”, being illegally fed and in a few instances being hit by a car. At 24, Grizzly 399 is a wise, old mom and so far these four cubs have thrived. May they continue to do so for years to come.
