Art of the Wild for Ours and Future Generations

Why do we surround ourselves with photographs of loved ones—those still here or departed, including animal companions that have graced us with their presence? The act of remembrance, of honoring their memory, is powerful. Along these same lines, why do we put posters of favorite athletes, musicians or other notable leaders on the wall?  Why? Because they inspire us.

In the case of wildlife, there is a strong shared sense of adventure and belonging. Few examples speak better to this than the late Jackson Hole Grizzly 399 and her multiple sets of cubs who ambled at her side. Most notable of all 399’s charismatic broods was the dynamic quartet known as “the quads.” 399 introduced them to the larger world in the spring of 2020 when she was remarkably 24 years old.

During his chronicling of 399’s family tree,  Thomas D. Mangelsen amassed, by his estimate, a million frames. He released only a small number as collectible and signed limited edition prints.

We know that for Grizzly 399’s millions of adoring onlookers from around the globe, not everyone can afford a Mangelsen limited edition print when they are available. Some may be new to experiencing the lifelong enjoyment of having dramatic, artful visions of nature in their living space and offices.

With this in mind, Mangelsen is offering three new open edition print releases featuring Grizzly 399 and her four cubs. The prints offer engaging glimpses of 399 and her rambunctious cubs when they were just cubs-of-the-year. Each chronicles a different day in her remarkable life as a mother.

In Surprise on the Trail - 399 and Quadruplets, viewers encounter 399 doing the things that made her famous as a legendary matriarch. Nurturing her offspring in the face of possible danger and keeping them close, she brings familial comfort in their first full year of life.

And in At River’s Edge: 399 and Quadruplets, 399 and cubs, now nearly nine months old and having put on weight thanks to the richness of mother’s milk, prepare to ford the Snake River. Just months earlier, 399 led them to this same spot and gave her tribe their first swimming lessons.

“Every time I see an image of 399 and her family it brings back fond memories and touches my heart,” Thomas Mangelsen says. “The impact of her presence positively affected so many of us. She lived in our time and we in hers. People will be talking about her for many generations to come.”
