In Pursuit | Legacy Reserve Collection

Denali National Park, Alaska

Legacy Reserve | Edition of 20

In 1975 when Mangelsen created his very first limited edition photograph, he made the decision to hold back his most valuable prints, numbered 1 to 20, so that one day as a career capstone they would be offered as part of a Legacy Reserve Collection. Many images featured in this collection have been sold out for more than a decade, complemented by recent masterworks destined to sell out in the future.

Initially reserved for museums, conservation nonprofits, and family members, collectors now have the unique opportunity to acquire Mangelsen’s “best of the best” photographs, to own one of the twenty numbers from his personal artist reserve. Each Legacy Reserve fine art collector will be invited to join the legendary photographer for an unforgettable Grand Teton Adventure.

Mangelsen is as much a conservationist as he is an artist, and thus a portion of the Legacy Reserve Collection proceeds will be donated to critical conservation issues close to his heart.

The whole of his life, Thomas D. Mangelsen has identified with the plight of underdogs who prevail—or somehow manage merely to survive— in the face of overwhelming peril. On one of his many trips to the wild Alaska interior, the related metaphor of lion and mouse was brought into sharp focus, made manifest with two North American equivalents. “I love watching the grand plays of nature that need no explanation but speak to impulses deep inside of us and are every bit as engaging as any words Shakespeare might have penned,” Mangelsen says.

So it is with In Pursuit—Grizzly Bear taken in Denali National Park. Here, an arctic ground squirrel runs for his life to avoid becoming lunch for a grizzly desperate, in turn, to become filled with enough calories to get the animal through long winter hibernation. Leaving us to draw our own conclusion, Mangelsen is pleased to report that no matter who viewers are cheering on, the actual outcome in this open-ended narrative is likely to make all parties pleased—at least temporarily.

“I am always enthralled by cliffhangers that come with surprise endings,” Mangelsen says.
