ABOUT THE IMAGE:
What is on the mind of a bald eagle? What does it think about? What inhabits its hopes and dreams? With his photographDreamcatcher
, Thomas D. Mangelsen invites us to ponder the questions and while we are doing so, take stock of the visage of a remarkable avian. His curiosity as a naturalist and his boyhood love of birds inspired this close-up view which otherwise would have come through a fleeting glimpse using binoculars.
“When we pick up an avian field guide, we read about a bird’s most readily identifiable characteristics but what do they really mean?” he asks. “As a member of the hawk family, the bald eagle has a bill that is sharply hooked, designed for tearing the flesh of its prey, mainly fish. Small, oval-shaped nostrils open in the soft, featherlike skin of the upper mandible. This part of the bald eagle’s bill is called the cere, which in many hawks is often brightly colored. Beyond that, the features of an eagle are photogenic and fascinating.”
ranks among Mangelsen’s most popular photographs because while it reads visually as an artistic image exploring different shapes, colors and textures, it offers an intimate glimpse of our national wildlife symbol.
