The pink blooms of Pacific rhododendron provide contrast to the vibrant greens of the understory in a coastal redwood forest. Reaching heights of over 350 feet, redwoods are the tallest trees on earth and can live for over 2,000 years. Amazingly, these long-lived giants are dependent on fog to survive. Though the northern California coast receives abundant rain, it primarily falls during winter storms. Through the rest of the year, redwoods absorb vital moisture from fog during almost daily marine layer events. Not only does the cool blue fog add drama to the scene, it is sustaining these behemoths of northern California.
