With the northern Teton Range as a backdrop, Grizzly 399 leads her triplet charges through a sagebrush-covered hillside above Willow Flats. Not much bigger than the arrowleaf balsamroot blooming around them, these cubs-of-the-year often stand on their hind legs to get a better view of their surroundings. A few weeks after this scene was captured, one of these cubs was no longer with their mom. This was not a tragic event though, as this cub was adopted by another offspring of 399, Grizzly 610, who already had two cubs of her own. The reason for the adoption is not known, but while rare, cub adoption does happen in the bear world.
