The first major storm of the season covers Grand Teton National Park in a blanket of white as Grizzly 399 and her cubs head south to areas of the park that are open to elk hunting. The 25-year-old bear has learned where to find plentiful food left behind by hunters. Once the hunting season has closed and there are no more scraps to find, she will begin the almost 50-mile journey north to the high country to start hibernating. These easy meals keep her out of the den much longer than is normal, even up to late-December or early-January, making the return trip much more difficult with the deep snow that has accumulated.
