With the landscape covered in snow, Grizzly 399 leads her two-year-old cubs across the still mostly-frozen Buffalo Fork. The deep spring snowpack often forces recently emerged grizzly bears to travel great distances in search of their first significant meal of the year. As the early spring nights grow warmer, the snow does not refreeze overnight, making it too soft to support the weight of the big bruins. Despite the tiresome walking, this bear family traveled 30 miles south and back north again in a span of two weeks.
