Wings of Hope
Open Edition | Open Edition
Flying to roost against a velvet western sky, sandhill cranes by the thousands return to their nightly resting place along sandbars and shallows on Nebraska's Platte River. Numbering more than four hundred thousand, the cranes of the Central Flyway stage here for several weeks during their annual northerly migration. Come dusk, the sandhills darken the skies, spreading over the expanse of prairie horizon in 360 degrees and arriving one countless flock after the next. In springtime, in sight and in sound, the Platte River comes to life with the language of crane.
